Indonesia Rice Production Forecast: A Seven-Year Peak and Enhanced Food Security

Rice production in 2019 was 13.63 million tons, in 2020 it was 11.52 million tons, in 2021 it was 13.58 million tons, in 2022 it was 13.71 million tons, in 2023 it was 12.98 million tons, and in 2024 it was 11.07 million tons.

“Compared to the production realization in previous years, the potential for rice production during January to April 2025 is expected to be the highest in the last seven years or since 2019,” said BPS Head Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti in Jakarta on Monday (3/3/2025).

For regions that contribute greatly in the high production of domestic rice, it is still concentrated on Java Island with the dominant areas being in East Java Province of 2.71 million tons, Central Java 2.3 million tons, and West Java 1.96 million tons. While the largest production outside Java is South Sulawesi at 1.08 million tons, South Sumatra 933 thousand tons, and Lampung with 788 thousand tons.

Moreover, the head of BPS said that the high production of domestic rice is also supported by rainfall in all parts of Indonesia which is on the medium to high criteria, thus spurring the productivity of food crops.

“These conditions will support rice crop development activities throughout January until April 2025. However, it is also necessary to be aware of very high criterion rainfall in a number of regions that can disrupt the productivity of rice crops,” she said.

According to her, in line with large rice production, the rice harvest in the same period was also the highest in the last seven years, with the accumulated harvest from January to April 2025 reaching 24.22 million tons or an increase of 26.02 percent on an annual basis (year on year).

For the farmers' exchange rate (NTP) in February 2025, BPS recorded a decrease of 0.18 percent compared to the previous month (month to month) to 123.45, with the contributing commodities in the farmers' receiving price index being cayenne pepper, onion, red pepper, and cocoa or cocoa beans.

As for the agricultural business exchange rate (NTUP) in the same period, it was recorded at 125.69 or a decrease of 0.67 percent on a monthly basis.

Pursue Self-Sufficiency

Minister of Agriculture (Mentan) Andi Amran Sulaiman reiterated his party's full commitment to pursuing food self-sufficiency. In fact, Amran judged the momentum of the holidays and Ramadan fasting were not a hindrance to agricultural performance.

“There is no red date for the ranks of the Ministry. Holidays and fasting are not an excuse, we must remain passionate and dedicated to realizing national food security,” Mentan said on Sunday (2/3/2025).

Although it coincides with the holiday and is still in the early atmosphere of fasting worship, Mentan remains committed to ensuring the performance of the agricultural sector runs optimally. In the meeting, Mentan discussed the progress of the Ministry of Agriculture's performance since the beginning of 2025 and strategic steps that need to be taken in the next few months.

He also encouraged his ranks to continue accelerating to reach targets for increasing productivity and achieving food self-sufficiency.

“I appreciate the father/mother for her good performance so far. I ask you to stay focused on carrying out tasks to promote increased productivity and food self-sufficiency as directed by President Prabowo Subianto,” he said.

Some of the topics that the meeting focused on include the realization of the distribution of agricultural tools and machinery (alsintan) aid, seeds and fertilizers, as well as the management of human resources (HR) to boost agricultural production in the next few months.

Mentan believes that results will not betray effort. He revealed that Indonesia's agricultural sector is in a safe condition thanks to the hard work of all parties, including farmers up to the ranks of the Ministry of Agriculture.

“At the moment, other countries such as Malaysia, Philippines, Japan are experiencing a rice food crisis. Even the Malaysian parliament has called on its government to study Indonesia. This is our pride and we must continue to prove that Indonesian agriculture is getting better,” he explained.

In addition, Amran also affirmed that synergy and hard work from all elements are urgently needed for Indonesia's agricultural sector to develop and be competitive.

“With a high spirit of work, the Ministry of Agriculture continues to strive to realize food independence and the welfare of farmers throughout Indonesia,” Amran said.
